Me and fellow photographer friend, shoutout Jordan (@ruffnerphotography), decided to host one of the most epic styled shoots ever this past weekend! We’ve been spending the last summer styling shoots for ourselves on the west coast and some back in our home state of Virginia. Mainly to see our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to organizing a styled shoot. We really wanted to make sure that we worked out all of the kinks prior to us inviting guests and oh my gosh did it pay off.
We had the most amazing vendors and while we have worked with many of them in the past, it was great to organize this styled shoot for everyone to come together and show off their crafts. Our models were true gems as well and were down for just about anything! When hosting a styled shoot, it’s all about testing our creativity and really going above and beyond to try new things. Having models that were so open to our creative vision was seriously such a blessing. Honestly it was probably one of the reasons why this styled shoot was such a success!
When thinking of locations to shoot at, one in particular that came to mind was Skyline Drive at Shenandoah National Park. The weather on this day was absolutely perfect and we were able to hit that beautiful golden glow on top of some breathtakingly beautiful mountain views. We actually went to a view different spots, ones that I have been to before. Each had their own unique views AND lighting so it was so cool to be able to get different vibes from each location.
One moment in particular really stands out to me though. As we were jumping from location to location, we all hopped in our own cars. Essentially we built this huge train of photographers, models and hair & makeup artists. It was at that moment when Jordan & I had this euphoric moment of “wow…. we did this!”. The moment was so surreal to see that everything that we had planned and worked for finally came through. It was such a blessing and it turned out better than we ever could have imagined.
Looking back at it now, this styled shoot was pretty different than other styled shoots that you may see. Usually when styled shoots are organized, it’s with photographers who have photography experience or have been to a styled shoot. In this case, majority of the photographers who attended were people who never even picked up a camera before. So this shoot ended up kind of being a combination of teaching aspiring photographers things such as how to pose a client, how to get the perfect angles and giving guidance. It ended up being a styled shoot + a workshop in one which was so incredibly cool!
Overall this shoot was a MAJOR success. Everyone who attended was such a blast to work with and really showed out! Everyone was so excited about how everything turned out and I can’t wait to host another one!
If you loved this Skyline Drive Styled Shoot then you’re going to love this Kolob Canyons Styled Elopement.
